Toxicological Analysis by Assessment of Vascularization and Cell Viability Using the Chicken’s Chorioallantoic Membrane (CAM Assay)

5 May, 2023 | CAM, IKOSA AI, Publications

This paper presents a promising alternative in animal experimentation – the CAM assay using hen’s eggs. The CAM provides a suitable environment for xenograft implantation, enabling the growth of human tumors. Evaluating therapeutic agents for efficacy and toxicity after intravascular injection is possible with this model. The study showcases intravital microscopy, ultrasonography, and immunohistochemistry to assess vascularization and viability. This innovative approach proves valuable for toxicological analysis and potentially reduces ethical concerns, financial burden, and bureaucratic hurdles associated with traditional animal models in scientific research.

Watch our discussion about the CAM Assay with the publication authors Dr. Nadine Wiesmann from the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz and Dr. Jonas Eckrich from the St. Elisabeth Hospital Cologne-Hohenlind.
